Synopsis

Following the suicide of its head chef, a private memorial gathering at a renowned Berlin restaurant escalates into a psychological tribunal. Caught in the manipulative machinery of a seemingly kind-hearted managing director, years of simmering conflicts, emotional dependencies and the bitter consequences of a toxic system come to a head. A system that those involved have helped sustain out of fear, loyalty or sheer self-interest.

The Story

At a private memorial gathering, the four members of the restaurant's core management team come together to mourn and pay their final respects to the deceased. But what begins as a moment of remembrance escalates into a merciless confrontation, triggered by a eulogy delivered by Eva, the restaurant's managing director. Eva speaks of family, solidarity and the collective "we" behind her own decisions. She emphasizes the extraordinary care she has shown everyone present, as well as the deceased, laments the difficulties he faced and finally raises the question of what she herself could possibly have done wrong.

The answer is not long in coming. Eva's staged self-accusation ignites a bitter confrontation over the systematic exploitation within the restaurant, the moral excuses each of them has made for themselves, and the agonizing question of personal responsibility in their treatment of the deceased.

In the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere of the dining room, conflicts that have been suppressed, justified or avoided for years erupt. Long-standing loyalties are weaponized, once-trusted alliances crumble, and seemingly selfless acts reveal their deeply self-serving nature.

The carefully maintained illusion, held together only by a toxic web of emotional and professional dependencies, inevitably comes crashing down.

The Themes

The Toxic Restaurant explores the darkest depths of an emotionally abusive system in which the roles of perpetrator and victim are intertwined, without power and responsibility being equally distributed. While Eva's abuse of power lies at the heart of the story, the system's continued existence also depends on those who justify her decisions, tolerate her violations of boundaries or remain silent for personal reasons.

The series explores the painful grey area in which relationships do not implode through open hostility, but crumble under the consequences of weaponized virtues: where apparent kindness becomes a tool of emotional control, personal suffering is used to claim moral superiority, misguided loyalty descends into bitter martyrdom and complicity, and the claim of professional neutrality gives way to opportunistic silence.

We're Making It Biting, Dirty and Downright Wicked!

We've decided to take this highly sensitive subject matter in a radically different direction, turning it into a satirical psychological thriller that dissects the mechanisms of psychological abuse with pitch-black humor.

Happy Halloween.
